ABIGAIL MAAS ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN FOR IOWA STATE AUDITOR

IOWA COUNTY, IA — Iowa County Supervisor Abigail Maas announced she will run for State Auditor in 2026.

“As a farmer, business owner, and local elected official, I bring real-world experience and common sense to the job,” said Maas. “Auditing should be objective, independent, and focused on protecting taxpayers—not special interests.”

Maas was re-elected to a second term as Iowa County Supervisor in 2024 and currently serves as vice-chair. Known for her focus on fiscal responsibility, she has led efforts to cut property taxes and ensure careful oversight of public funds.

She was a part of the first class to graduate from the Iowa State Association of Counties’ Certified Supervisor Program and has helped other supervisors navigate their budgets. With a background in accounting and financial audits, Maas was recently appointed to the Iowa Municipalities Workers Compensation Association Board. Her deep knowledge of local government budgets and state code gives her an edge in identifying fraud, waste, and abuse.

“Property taxes in Iowa outpace income taxes by over a billion dollars. We can’t just treat the symptoms—we need to dig into the costs driving local spending,” she said. She proposes using the Auditor’s office to partner with local governments to find savings and increase transparency.

She also supports exploring a statewide financial software system to give the State real-time data from local governments. “This would improve accountability and consistency,” she said.

“Being State Auditor has been a long-time goal—not for personal gain, but to serve every Iowan,” said Maas. “I’ll take this job seriously and fight for taxpayers, regardless of party.”
